Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: Can anyone enroll in QuitWorks-RI?

A: QuitWorks-RI is open to all Rhode Island residents, regardless of health insurance status.

Q:Is there any cost to the patient or the hospital/health center/practice for QuitWorks services?

A: QuitWorks-RI services are funded through the Rhode Island Department of Health. There is no cost to the patient or the referring provider, office practice or the hospital/health center for basic QuitWorks-RI services and materials (QuitWorks-RI enrollment forms, patient counseling services and education materials, and patient status reports). If a hospital, health center or large practice would like a customized QuitWorks-RI program, the QuitWorks-RI team will consult with your staff free of charge.

Q: Is the patient enrollment procedure time-consuming?

A: No, it takes just a few minutes to complete a simple enrollment form and fax it to QuitWorks-RI.

Q: How will I know about my patient’s progress in quitting tobacco use once I enroll him/her in QuitWorks-RI?

A: QuitWorks-RI will send up to two status reports to the provider designated to receive reports. The first faxed report is sent to the provider within several weeks of receiving the patient enrollment form. We’ll tell you if we reached your patient and services the patient requested. Then, in seven to eight months if we reach your patient again, we’ll tell you his/her quit status.

Q: If a patient returns to the practice or health care facility at a later date and is still smoking, can the patient be re-enrolled in the QuitWorks-RI program?

A: Yes, it often takes many attempts to quit smoking. You can re-enroll your patient and QuitWorks-RI will reach out to him/her again.

Q: Can adolescents benefit from enrollment in the program or is it specifically designed for adults?

A: QuitWorks-RI is for all ages, but parental or legal guardian consent on the referral form is needed for youth under 18 years of age to be enrolled in the program. However, adolescents may call the QuitLine at the Rhode Island Try-To-STOP TOBACCO Resource Center at 1-800-QUIT-NOW (1-800-784-8669) for quit smoking support or may use the becomeanex.org (Additional information for tobacco users and providers can be found at http://www.health.ri.gov/healthrisks/tobacco/index.php) informational website without parental consent.

Q: What kind of assistance will QuitWorks-RI provide in developing a plan and setting up a system for my hospital or health center?
